Her focus is fundamental skill development, but more importantly speaking to the heart and character of the player. She sees volleyball as the ultimate athletic metaphor for life and a great opportunity for young people to learn trust and teamwork.
When she’s not volleyballing, Joanna practices law and runs a youth leadership program called FLOWERS. She enjoys listening to history podcasts and writing. Her favorite person in the world is her husband, Walter, trains offensive lineman. Joanna and Walter have four children together: Scarlet (13), Harrison (11), Benjamin (6), and Avery (4). Volleyball Norman: The Mission

Our vision is to build up, engage, and empower young women through the game of volleyball. Beginning in adolescence, young women face innumerable worldly forces seeking to shrink them away from purpose. But young women who participate in sports exhibit higher self-confidence, increased cardiovascular health, and even reduced risk of depression. Volleyball provides a beautiful and elaborate metaphor for life—trusting one’s self and investing in the collective team. When we teach technical skills, practical game understanding, and the ability to trust ourselves in the moment, we foster lessons beyond the gym.

My personal mission is to bring and grow volleyball to 10,000 new young people. The game of volleyball has been a blessing in my life since seventh grade. Since then, I’ve played at multiple levels: varsity, junior college, college club, and adult co-ed and coached athletes from elementary school to high school seniors. Now, as a Director for Volleyball for the Norman Optimist Club, middle school coach at CCS in Norman, and Club Director and Coach, I do my best to expand the game for young ladies in second grade through eighth grade in and around Norman.
